As-Salamu Alaikum. Some of my friends and relatives try to show me video lectures of some scholars like Maulana Tariq Jameel, etc. I tell them that I cannot watch the video as it is a sin. They respond by saying, “are you accusing such a big scholar for sinning”. Can I watch these kind of videos or not?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The permissibility of digital videos is a highly contested issue amongst contemporary ‘Ulamā. Whilst many ‘Ulamā permit this, many others consider it to be the same as making pictures (Taswir), which is impermissible. In such instances, it is advisable to exercise precaution and, rather, listen to audio recordings of the ‘Ulamā.
