Pigskin Sandals: Wudu and Makeups

Answered by Sidi Moustafa Elqabbany

After reading the article on your website about pigskin and seeing the picture that depict that, I came to realize that a my sandals that I was wearing for quite some time appear to have pigskin sole lining (i.e. the part one steps on and is in contact with the sole of the foot). The question is what about the salat that I prayer after walking with these sandals are they valid or not ( I NEVER prayed wearing them). The foot often times gets moist while walking and thus humidity in between the sole and the pigskin lining is there. In a few cases I wore them when my foot was not dry after making wudu. Also, what do I need to do to purify my feet now, do I have to wash them seven times with water one being with soil? Please reply ASAP (for both parts of question 1) validity of salat 2) how to purify the feet).

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

First of all, you should make sure that your sandals contain pigskin. If you are not sure, and never become certain of this, then nothing is required of you.

To begin with your second question, the strongest opinion within our school is that pigskin is heavy filth. If you are certain that moisture existed between the pigskin and anything else, you must wash the affected parts seven times, one being with soil. Ideally, soil should be used during the first washing.

There are three ways to do this:

Mix soil with water until it is murky and pour it over the affected area. This is the best way.

Pour soil over the affected area and then pour water over it.

Pour water over the affected area and then pour soil over it.

Then one pours water over the affected area six more times.

The above is the strongest opinion in our school. There is another opinion in our school that is weaker than the above but still strong that indicates that pig filth is medium filth. In this case, all you need to do is pour water over the affected area. It is likely that you do this several times per day already during wudu. Thus, in all likelihood, your feet are already purified.

As for your first question, the only prayers you have to make up are those that occurred after your wet feet came into contact with the pigskin and before they were purified. If you follow the second opinion (that pigskin is medium filth), then these missed prayers will likely be few in number. My teacher, Sidi Hamza Karamali, recommends that you wash your feet seven times (including once with soil) so that all your future prayers are unanimously valid, but that you follow the easier opinion regarding your past prayers, thereby avoiding hardship.

And Allah the Exalted knows best.
