Position of feet in Congregational prayer

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Amjad Rasheed

Is it sunna for the person praying to touch the foot of his neighbour [s. with his foot] when he is praying in a group?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

What our Shafi’i imams have said is that it is sunna that the person praying distance his own two feet from each other when in the standing position and in prostration as much as a handspan, whether he is praying alone or in a group. If this does not cause him to touch the foot of his neighbour, it is not required of him to burden himself to do so.
