Reciting Additional Supplications in Salatul Maghrib Before Going to Sajdah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamo Alaykum Hadhrat: One of the imams recites Allahummahdina Feeman Hadaytah….(the complte dua) and some Qur’anic supplications with hands raised in the last raka’h of the Maghrib salah (i.e. in qawma) just  before going to sajdah.  What should a Hanafi should do in this situation.

This process is considered as “Qunoot-e-Nazilah”. According to an authentic narration, it shall be performed without rafa’ yadain (i.e. the action of raising one hands towards ones face). According to Fiqah al-Hanafi it is specific with only Salatul-Fajr and should not be performed in any other salah. Praying salah in this manner does not invalidate the salah, however if the Imam is Hanafi then he should read it in Salatul-Fajr, if needed and according to the method described in Fiqah al-Hanafi. If however, the Imam is Shaf’ai and the muqtadi (the follower) is Hanafi (as it is prevalent with the Imams of the Harmain), then the muqtadi should remain standing in his positione while saying aameen in a low voice without raising hands (as one does during du’a).
