Consumption of the Wife’s Breast Milk

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah

Is the breast milk produced in a woman right after giving birth to a child permissible for consumption by her husband? I am confused regarding this situation and others have been inquiring me regarding this as well. Please guide me regarding this situation and remove my confusion. What is the ruling according to the Hanafi madhab regarding the situation when the husband does end up consuming her wife’s breast milk.

Walaikumassalam Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

It is considered haram for the husband to consume the wife’s breast milk. If this milk makes its way into the husband’s mouth then he should immediately remove it from his mouth. If someone drank such milk unknowingly or by mistake his action will be considered haram. However, through this action, there will be no effect on the Nikah and she will still be his wife. One should perform firm repentance and if it is probably that milk will come out then refrain from performing any such action through which the milk will make its way to the husband’s throat.
