Wudu: Is sprinkling enough?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

A close relative is unwell and on medication for  their illness . When it comes to for  wudu  they find it difficult to keep performing wudu … I have tried to help her on several  occasions but I am not always at home as I have to work. Is it ok if she just sprinkles water on her feet- would this  be sufficient?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful, and all blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, his Folk, Companions and those who follow their noble way,

The Qur’anic ayah is clear: one has to wash the feet. Mere sprinkling is not enough. Simple solution: get her a small wide bucket or tub in which to put her foot, and a jug with which to pour water onto her feet if she can’t raise them. After pouring water onto her feet, she should (if she can) wipe her feet. This isn’t necessary if the pouring itself gets water to cover the whole foot. Show her how easy this is. Older people often won’t listen to the arguments of younger people, but will follow something that seems reasonable and practical.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani.
