Is it permissible to give money and gifts to family members to celebrate the day of eid? …After Eid Salaat people usually greet each other with hugs and wish and say ‘Eid Mubarak’ to one another at the masjid/eidgah….

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

1) Is it permissible to give money and gifts to family members to celebrate the day of eid?

2) After Eid Salaat people usually greet each other with hugs and wish and say ‘Eid Mubarak’ to one another at the masjid/eidgah. Also when family/friends gather or meet each other they wish and say ‘Eid Mubarak’. Is this considered an act of Bidah?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh

1) It is permissible to give and take gifts and money on the day of Eid as long it is done only as a celebration and one does not regard it to be an ‘ibadat or Sunnah.

(Aapke Masail aur Unka Hal Vol.2 Pg.418 – Maktabah Bayyinat)

2) To greet one another with hugs (معانقة) and shaking hands (مصافحة) on the day of Eid is not proven through Shari’ah. It will be regarded as bid’ah if anyone claims it to be part of Deen.

(Raddul Muhtar Vol.6 Pg.381 – H.M. Sa’eed Company)
(Fatawa Mahmoodiyah Vol.8 Pg.463 – Jami’ah Farooqiyah)
(Kifayatul Mufti Vol.3 Pg.302 – Darul Isha’at)

This practice is prevalent amongst the Muslims today, and most of them regarded to be as part of Deen; therefore, it is advisable to refrain from it.

As long as greeting itself is concerned, there is no undesirability in it.

And Allah knows best
