Car Insurance questions

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Ilyas Patel

2 car insurance questions:

1) If my parents have more than the minimum coverage on one of their cars, can I still be on the same policy? Assuming that I have my own car, and have minimum coverage on my car, but a parents car on the same policy has more than the minimum coverage. Being on their policy should save me a lot of money compared to getting car insurance on my own.

2) Should one strive to pay the least amount (in premiums) for car insurance, or strive to take only the amount of insurance legally required, even if this means paying more in premiums?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the name of Allah Most Compassionate Merciful
A1.
I hope you are fine and in the best of health and iman.
Car insurance is a mandatory legal requirement. It would be permissible for you to be on your parent’s policy, as you will avoid giving insurance if you had your own and save money the same time. But one should do one’s best to avoid taking out comprehensive cover as it is not mandatory and third party suffices. So you should try to advise your parents to take out the legally required premium for the next time with love and wisdom.
A2.
One should take out the legally required premium though it means paying more in premiums.
And Allah alone knows best
