Performing Hajj-e-Badal

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum

I have not performed Hajj yet. I am planning to go to Hajj next year, Insha Allah. My mother has not performed Hajj either. Can I perform Hajj on her behalf even though I have not done Hajj myself. If so then do we both my mother and I get the reward for it?. Please provide me with detail response. Jazakallah

If Hajj is compulsory upon your mother, but she is unable to perform it, and Hajj is not compulsory upon you, then you are allowed to perform Hajj on her behalf utilizing her wealth. This Hajj will be regarded as a Hajj performed by your mother and it will not be considered as your Fardh Hajj. It is hoped that you will not be deprived of the reward. If you wish to perform Hajj on your mother’s behalf using your own wealth, then in this case you should first perform the Hajj which is due on you since you are in a position to do so. If you have enough wealth to accommodate the expenditure of another Hajji (pilgrim), then you should take someone with you who will perform the Fardh Hajj on your mother’s behalf.

If Hajj is not Fardh upon your mother then you should perform the Hajj due on you. Thereafter the following year you can perform a Nafl Hajj on your behalf and honour your parents with the Thawaab. In this manner you and your parents will receive the reward of performing Hajj Insha Allah. (Al-Hidayah, Mu’allimul Hujjaj, Page 303)
