‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) concern when he could not find locusts

I would like to know In Mishkatul Masabih, under the book of trials, the chapter of the signs of Qiyamah, what is the pronunciation and translation of the word أري?

يسأل عن الجراد هل أري منه شيئا

Answer

This is part of the narration recorded in Shu’abul Iman. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) sent people to different countries to look for locusts as he hadn’t seen locusts in a while. He was afraid, as Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said that locusts will become extinct, which will be followed by great trials.

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 9659)

Regarding the pronunciation of the word in question, Mulla ‘Ali Al Qari (rahimahullah) states that it can be read أُرِيَ (uriya) and أَرَى (ara), which would mean ‘Can I be shown [any locust]’ or ‘Can I see?’

(Refer: Mirqat, Hadith: 5463)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
