Walking in front of one performing Salah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is there a Hadith mentioning a warning for walking in front of one performing Salah?

Answer

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has cited the following Hadith under: ‘The Chapter on the sin of the one who crosses over the Musalli’

Sayyiduna Abul Juhaym ‘Abdullah ibnul Harith (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘If the one who crosses over the person in salah knew what sin he accrues, [he would realise that] to wait for even forty [years] is better than proceeding accross the musalli.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 510, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1132 and Musnad Bazzar, Hadith: 3782)

The part in bold in from Musnad Bazzar.

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) states that this proves the impermissibility of this deed, since the Hadith entails an emphasised prohibition and a stern warning.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) concludes that this means that this deed could be considered as a major sin.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith:  510)
