Usage of the term Maqbul

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Can you give a detailed discussion in regards to the different usages of different Imams on the term ‘Maqbul’.

It seems as different scholars use the term flexibly.

If you can cover all the major scholars usages that would be appreciated.

Answer

Generally the Muhaddithun use the term Maqbul to refer to Hadiths that are acceptable/reliable. Technically these Hadiths are labelled: Sahih (authentic) or Hasan (sound)

Some Muhaddithun do use this term to refer to reliable (thiqah) narrators as well without any specified definition.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar’s (rahimahullah) specific usage of this term

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) is the one who has used this term for narrators with a specific criteria.

This is his personal terminology and not a general one.

In fact, even he has only used this specifically in his book: Taqribut Tahdhib, and not in his other books.

You may see more on this in his introduction to Taqribut Tahdhib.

Also see Shaykh ‘Awwamah’s introduction to Taqrib, pg.57
