Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Can you please provide the full Hadith you have answered here from Sahih Muslim regarding delaying a janazah.

Answer

The text of the Hadith is as follows:

Sayyiduna Jabir ibn ‘Abdillah (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported: “Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) once delivered a sermon and mentioned a Sahabi who passed away. His shroud was not [large enough] to cover his body and he was buried at night.  Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) reprimanded them that a person be buried at night, until he (Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) performs the Janazah except if there is a dire necessity. And Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “When one of you shrouds his brother, he should shroud him well.’”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 943)

Kindly refer to a Mufti/Darul Ifta regarding a fatwa on burying at night.
