The virtue of spending Ramadan in Makkah

Is this narration authentic?

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Whoever is in Makkah when Ramadan comes, and he fasts and prays qiyam as much as he can, Allah will write for him the reward of a hundred thousand Ramadans observed elsewhere, and for every day Allah will write for him the reward of manumitting a slave, and for every night the reward of manumitting a slave, and for every day the reward of providing mounts for two fighters in Allah’s cause, and for every day a good deed, and for every night a good deed.”

Answer

Imam Ibn Majah (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith with an extremely weak chain. Some Muhaddithun have declared this problematic narrator a fabricator.

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3117, Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 2 pg. 531. Also see: Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 3455, 3853)

Imam Abu Hatim Ar Razi (rahimahullah) has declared the text of the Hadith unreliable (munkar).

(Kitabul ‘Ilal, vol. 3 pg. 113, number: 735. Also see: Targhib, vol. 2 pg. 91 and ‘Ujalatul Imla, pg. 223)

One should avoid quoting this Hadith.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
