Believers interceding for their companions in the Hereafter

What is the authenticity of the Hadith which states that people in Jannah will intercede for their companions who would perform Salah and fast with them in this world but find themselves in Jahannam in the Hereafter?

Answer

This is part of a lengthy Hadith recorded by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu). The Hadith is therefore authentic.

The part you querying is as follows:

“…When they see that they are saved. They will say, “Rabb, our brothers! They used to perform Salah with us, fast with us and carry out [good deeds] with us.” Allah will say, “Go and take out [from Jahannam] whoever you find that has the weight of a dinar of Iman in his heart.” Allah will forbid the Fire to burn their faces. They will go to them and some of them will be in the Fire up to their feet and some up to the middle of their shins.

They will take out [from Jahannam] those they recognise and then return and Allah will say, “Go and take out whoever you find that has the weight of a half a dinar of Iman in his heart.” They will take out those they recognise and then return and Allah will say, “Go and take out whoever you find who has the weight of an atom of Iman in his heart.” They will take out those they recognise.’”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 7439 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 453)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
