Allah Ta’ala orders Musa (‘alayhis salam) to remain in the state of wudu

What is status of following narration?

إن الله أوحى إلى موسى أن توضأ، فإن لم تفعل فأصابتك مصيبة، فلا تلومن إلا نفسك

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah has recorded this narration as the statement of Yazid ibn Bishr (rahimahullah). Another version of this narration states that a person from the Ahlul Kitab (People of the Book) reported this narration.

The narration is therefore sourced from Historical sources [Israiliyyat].

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 47. Also see: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 9910 and Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 2528)

Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) has stated that the narrators are reliable, but that there is an omission in the chain.

However, through other narrations, the omitted narrator is known. He is also reliable.

(Refer: Footnotes of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah on Musannaf, Hadith: 47 and Tahdhibut Tahdhib, vol. 7 pg. 228)

The narration may be quoted as reported.

Translation

Allah Ta’ala revealed to Musa (‘alayhis salam): “Be in state of wudu. If you do not do so and a calamity befalls you then you only have yourself to blame.”

And Allah Ta’ala Know best.
