Did the Angel of death take permission from Prophet Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam to take his soul at the time of death.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

When our Prophet SAW died did Azraril (ra) ask permission before taking his life, if so, was he the only one or did this happen to our entire Prophet?

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Answer

What is firmly established in the hadith is that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam was given a choice of passing away or remaining in this world.

It is mentioned in a hadith narrated by Saaidah Aisha Radiallahu Anha who said: When the Prophet was healthy, he used to say, “No soul of a Prophet is taken until he has been shown his place in Paradise and then he is given the choice.” When death approached him while his head was on my thigh, he became unconscious and then recovered consciousness. He then looked at the ceiling of the house and said, “O Allah! (with) the highest companions.” I said (to myself), “He is not going to choose (to stay with) us.” Then I understood what he meant when he said that to us when he was healthy. The last words he spoke were, “O Allah! (with) the highest companions.” (Sahih Bukhari p.641 v.2)

As you can see from this hadith that the Angel of Death would take permission from all the Prophets to take their soul.

There are some ahadith which can be found in Imam Tabraani’s Mujamul Kabeer which are weak where it is mentioned that the Angel of Death took permission to take the soul of the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam.
