What is the ruling on standing up for the one who comes in?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

What is the ruling on standing up for the one who comes in?

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

There are two types of hadiths regarding the aforementioned question.

The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said “Whoever likes the people to stand up for him, let him take his place in Hell.” (Sunan Abu Dawud p.363 v.2)

Once the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam entered upon his daughter Fatimah Radiallahu Anha, she would stand up for him and take his hand, and make him sit in her place. And when she entered upon him, he would take her hand and make her sit in his place. (Sunan Abu Dawud p.362 v.2)

Imam Nawawi (RA) has said that to stand up for pious people and scholars is desirable. Allahmah Ibn Abideen Shami (RA) is also of this opinion. However, to stand up for irreligious people or for those who demand that people should stand up for them is Makruh and the hadiths which indicates to its impermissibility will be based on these situations. (Durre Mandhuud p.640 v.6)
