White gold rings and sterling silver rings plated with platinum

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I would like to ask if women are allowed to wear white gold rings and also i know men and women are not permitted to wear platinum rings, but what if it is a real silver ( sterling silver ) ring (for women) with platinum or rodium finish?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is permissible for women to wear rings made of gold and silver.

White gold is similar to yellow gold, except that platinum, nickel or zinc has been added to it instead of silver or copper.[1] It is well known that adding silver or copper to gold does not alter the fact that it is gold, which also applies to adding palladium to it.

Therefore, as a principle, if the ring is made of an alloy of different metals then the ring will take the ruling of whichever metal is predominant in the alloy. For example, if the finger ring is made of an alloy containing 37.5% platinum, 10% silver and 52.5% gold, the ring will be considered to be of gold and therefore it will be permissible for a woman to wear it.[2] (As for other types of jewellery of women — such as necklaces, ear rings etc. — they can be of any material.)[3]

Women can only wear gold and silver rings, or rings which are plated with gold and silver. Therefore, it will not be permissible for a woman to wear a ring which is plated or finished with platinum or rhodium because it does not display gold or silver.[4]

[1] White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal. In order to make the gold white, it is combined with metal alloys that are white in nature and plated with an extremely hard element called rhodium. Although strong, rhodium may wear away over time. Replating is a simple process that can be done to restore whiteness to rhodium-plated jewellery.

Q. What exactly is “white gold”?

A. You’ll find no ingots of white gold at Fort Knox. Pure 24 kt gold is always yellow. There is no such thing as an isotope of gold that is white.

But jewellery is rarely made from pure 24 kt gold because it’s rather soft (and expensive). Engagement rings, wedding bands and jewellery are usually made from an alloy of gold plus other metals. For example:

– 14 kt gold is 14/24ths gold and 10/24ths other metals,

– 12 kt gold is 12/24ths gold and 12/24ths other metals,

– 10 kt gold is 10/24ths gold and 14/24ths other metals.

At the risk of oversimplification, if the “other metals” in the alloy are copper or silver, the gold remains yellow; whereas if the “other metals” are palladium and/or nickel, they have a “bleaching effect” and the mixture becomes whitish, i.e., “white gold”.

White gold has the same properties as yellow gold, but it has been mixed with different metals to give it a white colour. Instead of the copper and silver used in yellow gold, white gold contains such metals as nickel, zinc, or even platinum. However, white gold should not be confused with platinum, which is much rarer than gold and hence more valuable.

The karat weight system used in white gold is the same as that used in yellow gold. 18K yellow gold and 18K white gold contain the same proportion of gold; only the remaining 25% of the alloy is different. Sometimes, white gold is plated with an even whiter metal, such as rhodium (a very rare member of the platinum family), to enhance its appearance.
