Could you Please stress the importance of maintaining and severing of Family Ties, with a few quotes and examples.

Answer

In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh

Islām has laid a lot of stress on joining of family ties and likewise has warned against the severing of family ties. Being good to one`s relatives is a natural quality which Allāh Tā`la has bestowed human being’s with. Ill-treating of a family member is against the natural disposition of man.

Rasūllullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasalam) has said in a Hadīth:

Oh people spread Salām, feed the poor and join family ties you will enter paradise with peace.

(Riyādus Sālihīn Pg.344,Ishāt)[1]

Joining of family ties is a means of increase in sustenance, Rasullullah (Sallahallahu alaihi wasalam) has said:

Whomsoever wishes that he be granted plenty of sustenance and that he enjoys a long life then, he should join his family ties.

Rasūllullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasalam) has said:

The one who really joins family ties is the one who when, his relatives break ties with him, he joins the ties

(Riyādus Sālihīn,Pg.155,Ishāt)[2]

In various places in the Qurān Allāh `la stresses upon joining and being good to family members, Allah Tāla says:

Allow the close relative his rights, the poor, and the wayfarer

(Sūra Rūm,Ayat,38)[3]

Allah Tā’la says in another verse:

And (remember) when we had taken the covenant of Banī Isrāīl that, do not worship any diety besides Allah and be good to the parents and the close relatives..

                        (Sura Baqara,āyat,83)[4]

Likewise there are many warnings on severing family ties, Rasullullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasalam) has  said in a Hadith:

A person who severs family ties will not enter paradise.

(Jāmius Saghīr,Pg.586,Hadith,No.9962)[5]
(Riyādus Sālihīn ,Pg. 161, Ishāt)

Rasullullah (Sallāllāhu alaihi wasalam) has said:

The major sins are to:

Ascribe a partner to Allah Tā`la
To disobey the parents
To take a false oath

(Riyādus Sālihīn Pg.160, Ishāt)

And Allāh Ta῾āla Knows Best
Wassalāmu ῾alaykum
