Can I keep A Guard Dog?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question:

Assalamu ‘alaykum.

Is it permissible to have bought a protection trained dog if kept outside and well taken care of with a heated dog house etc., even if you don’t feel unsafe and want it as a precaution for my family and me?

Answer:

Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

I pray you are well.

In general, guard dogs are permitted when there is a need – even in the house. However, angels do not enter places where dogs are kept. Keeping one’s dog outside the house would be better as a precaution. (Nahlawi, al Durar al Mubaha) If you do get one treat it well, and you’ll be rewarded for doing so.
