If I’m going to be traveling by air or land can I pray my Salaah ahead of time?

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Aoa i need to know about salat… if being a woman i dun find appropriate conditions to pray in 24 hour flight or while on road n i knw it before hand … can i make niyat of next day.s prayers and offer them to avoid qaza ? Eg if i pray on sunday the salat which i was supposed to pray on monday or tuesday to avoid a qaza n taking it to wednesday? Plus if yes … what combos can i use? Eg zuhr and asar of next day wd zuhr of same day? Maghrib of next day with isha zuhr or maghrib of same day? Fajr of next day wd zuhr maghrib and isha of same day? Isha of next day with zuhr maghrib or isha of same day? Plus can i offer witr and farz of isha combining them wd 2 separate other prayers eg witr wd zuhr and farz of isha wd maghrib… n if im making niyat for long distance journey eg pakistan to america (24 hour flight) … do i say qasar or full prayer ? If i pray before hand ?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We commend you for being concerned about the possibility of not being able to offer your salah while traveling, however, you cannot pray ahead of time.

You will need to offer each salah in its proper time while traveling. Men and women do so everyday. You will pray your obligatory [fardh] salah in a standing position and facing the qiblah.

On the road you can stop at gas stations, rest areas, etc. and pray. If you plan ahead of time you can easily determine where you need to stop to offer your salah.

On a plane, the flight crew can assist you if you request them and they are usually quite accommodating.

If, however, a situation arises where you are not permitted to pray on the plane or the plane is too small such that there is no room to pray in a standing position – then you will have to perform your salah in your seat and will also have to repeat it later on. [i][ii]
