Can you qoute some Ahadith in virtue of sitting in a Deeni gathering?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Arij Canada

Can you quote some Ahadith in virtue of sitting in a Deeni gathering? I have heard that the Sahabah radhiallahu anhum used to sit so close together that if a sheet was to be spread on top of them then there would be no dips, is there mention of this in an authentic narration?

Answer:

As Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) encouraged the Sahaba (radhiallahu anhum) on many occasions to participate in Deeni Majaalis. He emphasized the virtue of Deeni Majaalis and thus motivated them to take part. In one Hadith Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) says: “Whenever a group of people sit down to remember Allah Ta’aala the angels surround them and mercy, peace and tranquillity descends upon them and Allah Ta’aala makes mention of them in the gathering of angels”. (Muslim)

In another Hadith Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) says:” when you pass by the gardens of paradise then graze (take benefit). The Sahabah radhiallahu anhum enquired “what is meant by the gardens of paradise O Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)”. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) replied “the gatherings of Zikr”. (Fadlul Ilm wal Ulama pg 96)

At’aa (rahmatullahi alaih) explains: The Majaalis of Zikr are those Majaalis where Halal, Haraam (rules pertaining to the Shariat) how one must transact, pray, fast, give charity, and other injunctions of Shariat are discussed. (Fadlul Ilm wal Ulama pg 96)

Hence, it is understood that to participate in Deeni Majaalis is an extremely virtuous act.

We could not find the exact words which you have quoted regarding the Sahabah radhiallahu anhum that they used to sit so close that if a sheet was to be spread on top of them then there would be no dips.

Regarding the gathering of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) Hazrat Hussain (radhiallahu anhu) asked his father Hazrat Ali (radhiallahu anhu). He replied: “The Gathering of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was a gathering of forbearance and modesty, a gathering of tolerance and confidentiality. Voices were not raised, reputations were never smeared and faults were never publicised”.

He further describes the state of the Sahabah radhiallahu anhum participating in the gathering:” When Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) used to speak, the Sahabah radhiallahu anhum would lower their heads and listen attentively. It would seem as though birds were perched on their heads (an expression to explain the attentiveness and zeal they had in learning from Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) (Hayatus Sahabah vol1 pg 76-78)

To remain silent in Deeni Majaalis and listen attentively is also the hukm of the Qur’an: “When the Qur’an is being recited listen attentively and remain silent”.

In Tafseer ibn Katheer it is written: “this rule is in connection to Salaat and Zikr (when Allah (SUBHANAHU WA TA’AALA) is remembrance). (Tafseer ibn Katheer vol 2 pg 293)

May Allah Ta’aala give us all the importance of Deeni Majaalis and the ability to participate in them. (Ameen)
