I want to know what is referred to when a person says the time of zawaal? Does zawaal and istiwaa mean the same thing or are they different? Please elaborate.

Answer:
As Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh
Zawaal is the term used in common parlance (for the prohibited time); whereas in actual fact Istiwaa is meant, for at Zawaal i.e. when the sun ceases to rise and starts to decline, one is permitted to perform Salaah. This is the time when Zuhr Salaah time comes in. It is just a matter of the term Zawaal having become the commonly used word to denote Istiwaa.

قوله إستوائها-التعبير به أولى من التعبير بوقت الزوال لأن و قت الزوال لا تكره فيه الصلاة إجماعًا (نور الإيضاح ص 59 حاشية 5)

Istiwaa is calculated as specifically the mid time between sunrise and sunset. It lasts for approximately 2-3 minutes whereafter Zuhr time begins. As per precaution one should at least wait for 5 minutes (instead of only 2-3 minutes) before performing Salaah.

To understand what the Fuqahaa have stipulated and preferred as a means of calculating Istiwaa and regarding how long it lasts the following Ibaaraat should be read:

و احسن ما قيل فى معرفة الزوال ما قاله صاحب المحيط والخبازى و هو ان يغرز خشبة مستوية فى ارض مستوية قبل الزوال فما دام ظل العود على النقصان فهى على الصعود لم تزل الشمس فاذا وقف ولم ينقص ولم يزد فهو قيام الظهيرة فاذا اخذ فى الزيادة فقد زالت الشمس (تبيين الحقائق ج1 ص80 )

واصح ما قيل فى معرفة الزوال قول محمد بن شجاع انه يغرزخشبة فى ارض مستوية و تخط على راس الظل خطا فيجعل ما بلغ الظل علامة ما دام الظل عن الخط والعلامة فاذا وقف و لم يزد ولم ينقص فهو و قت الزوال و الاستواء فاذا اخذ فى الزيادة فقد زالت الشمس(بناية ج1 جزء 1 ص 488 )

وفى معرفة الزوال روايات اصحها ان يغرز خشبة مستوية فى ارض مستوية و يجعل عند منتهى ظلها علامة فان كان الظل ينقص عن العلامة فالشمس لم تزل و ان كان الظل و يجاوز الخط علم انها زالت وان امتنع الظل من القصر والطول فهو وقت الزوال كذا فى الظهيرية (بحر الرائق ج1 ص245 )
