Is it permissible to recite Quran during menstrual cycle? And if she is teaching in a madresah, what are the rules and restrictions during this period?

Answer:

As Salaamu Alaikum waRahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

We acknowledge receipt your query with relation to a Hafidhah woman reciting the holy Quran in her menstrual cycle and the restrictions of recitation for a woman teaching during her menstrual cycle. Our answer is as follows:

After referring to the books of Hadith and Fiqh, we come to know that a man in the state of ritual impurity (janabat), a woman experiencing her monthly menstrual cycle and a woman in her post natal bleeding are not allowed to recite the Quran. This rule applies dually to the recitation of a full verse or less then that when read with the intention of Tiliwat. (Fatawa Hindiyah vol 1, pg 38, Maraqil Falah pg 58)

This prohibition has been explicitly mentioned in the Ahadith of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. Ibn Umar Radhiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam said: a man in the state of ritual impurity and a woman in her menstrual cycle should not recite the Quran (Tirmizi, Hadith number: 121, I’laaus Sunan vol 1, pg 376)

The method a female teacher should adopt whilst teaching the Quran in her monthly cycle is, she should break down the verse and recite each word separately, ensuring that she stops between two words when dictating to the pupil. This method is not considered recitation in view of the Shariat, hence she will be avoiding the prohibition mentioned the Ahadith. (Fatawa Hindiyah vol 1, pg 38, Umdatul Fiqh vol 1, pg 296)
