Question:
Today it has become a custom for people to have Walimah on the same day as Nikaah. The couple have a Khalwah Saheehah and then the invitation is carried out.
Will doing the above action still be regarded as Walimah?
Or does this go against the objective of Walimah?
Answer:
اصبح النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بها عروسا فدعا القوم فأصابوا من الطعام (الخ) – صحيح البخارى 2/776
In the above Hadeeth, it is clearly mentioned that “Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam invited people for Walima the day after spending the night with his spouse. People then partook of the Walima food.”
There are other views in regards to Walimah as well which, we have listed below;
· Walimah can take place after the Nikah.
· After the Nikah as well as after intimacy.
[Re:- Fataawa Rahimiyyah Pg.239/240 Vol.8]
Based on the above, Walimah can take place on the same day after Khalwah Saheehah takes place, although the ideal and preferable method (as mentioned earlier on) is to have it the day after the couple have spent the night in privacy. Hadhrat Moulana Khaleel Ahmed Saheb Saharanpuri (Rahmatullahi Alaih) in his commentary of Sunan Abu Dawood has also mentioned this latter method as being the ideal and preferable method:
يجوز أن يولم بعد النكاح أو بعد الرخصة أو بعد أن يبنى بها والثالث هو الأولى (بذل المجهود 4/345 النسخة الهندية)
Translation: “It is permissible to host the Walima after the Nikah, or after Rukhsati or after spending the night with one’s spouse and this third method is the most preferred one.”
