A narration regarding Sayyidah Hawwa

Question

What is the authenticity and meaning of this Hadith?

“And were it not for Hawwa, no woman would ever mislead her husband.”

Answer

This narration is recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim and is therefore authentic.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “…Were it not for Hawwa, no woman would mislead her husband.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3330, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1470)

This Hadith is referring to the incident that transpired between Adam (‘alayhis salam), Sayyidah Hawwa and Iblis. Iblis had tricked and deceived them into eating from the tree. Sayyidah Hawwa, the first woman to be created and the mother of all the women of the world, fell for his deceit and then convinced Adam (‘alayhis salam) to believe Shaytan and eat from the tree. This action of Sayyidah Hawwa is what has been referred to in the Hadith.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 3330)

Other commentators explain that when Sayyidah Hawwa realised that Adam (‘alayhis salam) was going to eat from the tree, she did not advise him against that. This deed of not preventing him or advising him against eating from the tree is the ‘deception/misleading’ that is referred to in the Hadith.
