Question
Is this Hadith authentic?
Under the heading ‘Dhikr Qawl al-Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) Laa yajhar ba’dukam ‘ala ba’din fil-Quran, Imam Nasai (rahimahullah) has recorded the Hadith, ‘None of you should compete with one another in reciting Quran loudly.’
Answer
This narration is authentic and is recorded in Muwatta Imam Malik, As Sunanul Kubra of Imam Nasai, Musnad Ahmad and other Hadith sources:
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) once came out while the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) were offering Salah. They were reciting Quran in raised voices. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “The person offering Salah is in communion with his Rabb so he should see how he is doing so and you should not raise your voices over each other when reciting Quran.”
(Muwatta Imam Malik, Hadith: 213 and As Sunanul Kubra of Imam Nasai, Hadith: 3349 and 8037, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4 pg. 344)
‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared the narrators of Musnad Ahmad reliable (rijalus sahih).
(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 2 pg. 265)
Other similar narrations have also been recorded in the following sources:
- Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1326
