Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) disapproval of a Sahabi reciting aloud behind the Imam in Salah

Question

What is the translation of the word ‘خالجنيها’ in the following Hadith:

عن عمران بن حصين، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم صلى الظهر، فجعل رجل يقرأ خلفه بسبح اسم ربك الأعلى، فلما انصرف قال: أيكم قرأ – أو أيكم القارئ – فقال رجل أنا، فقال: قد ظننت أن بعضكم خالجنيها

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith.

خالجنيها means, ‘Disputing with me [with what I was reciting].

Sayyiduna ‘Imran ibn Husayn (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported: Once while Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was offering Zuhr Salah, a man started to recite ‘Sabbihisma Rabbikal A’ala’ (Surah: 87). After Salah, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked, ‘Who recited?’ The man replied, ‘I’. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘I thought that one of you was disputing with me.’

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 398)

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) explains that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) disapproved of this Sahabi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reciting aloud in Salah [behind the Imam].

(Sahih Muslim with Al Minhaj, Hadith: 885)
