My son doesn’t want to get married

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Son not getting married

There are a lot of resources on the internet for a son or duaghter to marry and the parents not agreeing for whatever reason. However, what if a son or daughter who can marry and choose not to? We have a 30year old son who is working and lives in his own house and visits us on a regular basis, staying over at our house few days of the week. As his parents, we are having trouble to get him to understand that Islam promotes marriage when one is able to marry. We have showed him potential muslim girls to marry in the past, but he does not seem too interested. What does Islam say on this matter, can we sit back and let him marry when he wants to or can we put a bit of pressure on him (we would never force him to marry unless it was the right person)? I have even considered that he makes fewer visits to our house until he agrees to marriage.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You enquire whether you should leave your son to marry whenever he wishes or whether he should be pressurised to marry. You also considered restricting his visits to your home.

Your son is likely to be well aware of the importance and virtues of marrying. We advise you to identify a person that can win over his confidence and enquire from him the reason for not marrying. We advise against pressurising him to marry and against restricting his visits to your home.
