Shariah-Approved Dress: Exploring Loose Clothing for Women in Islamic Fashion History

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: According to shariah, it is said that a woman should wear loose clothing. So, what type of dresses come under this title and what was the style of clothing worn by our Sahaabiyyas as I have heard that Ayesha radhiyallahu anha once liked a kurta which she later gave it in charity.

Bismillaah

A: Generally there were clothing that were loose fitting, coarse and around half the shin bone. The neck or any part of the upper chest was not visible in any way. Similarly, the contours of the breast or any part of the body were not at all visible.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
