Slaughtering another persons Qurbani animal instead of ones own Qurbani animal on the day of Eid

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. Last year, my uncle and I bought sheep from a farmer for Eid. My sheep and my uncles sheep were marked slightly differently from each other to show which sheep belongs to who. On Eid day, my uncle slaughtered my sheep thinking it is his and I slaughtered my uncles sheep thinking it is mines. Are both of our Qurbani’s valid for last year?

A. In the enquired case, as your uncle slaughtered your Udhiyyah/Qurbani animal and you slaughtered your uncles Udhiyyah/Qurbani animal on the day of Eid-ul-Adha, the Udhiyyah/Qurbani of your uncle and yourself will be valid and this would be regarded as both of you slaughtering each other’s animals on behalf of each other on the day of Eidh-ul-Adha.
