The droppings of a lizard in the Masjid

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. Our Masjid has many lizards. They leave their droppings all over the Masjid. It smells bad. Does it affect our Salaah?

A. One of the conditions for the validity of Salaah is that it is performed on a place/ground that is clean and pure. Therefore, the performance of Salaah on a place/ground that has lizard’s droppings on it will affect the validity of one’s Salaah as the droppings of a lizard are impure. The droppings of the lizard must be removed prior to performing Salaah on such a place/ground.

If a lizards’ droppings are found in a Masjid, only the actual spot of the droppings in the Masjid has to be washed and cleaned until the impurities are removed. The entire Masjid area does not have to be cleaned. (Badaai-Us-Sanaai’ 1/81 – Al-Lubaab 1/26)
