Question 

Is it permissible for women to wear platinum rings?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

It is prohibitively disliked for women to wear jewelry made from anything other than gold or silver. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

The exception, however, is with regards to other types of metals that are plated with gold or silver – as the metal is no longer visible. [Ibn Maza, al-Muhit al-Burhani]

Note that the above is in reference to the ring itself, the stone placed on the ring is not restricted to gold and silver. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

Opinions From Other Schools

According to the relied upon position of the Maliki school and according to the Hanbali school using iron, copper, lead, etc.. are disliked for men and women. This is due to the narration of a man that came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) with a ring resemble brass, so the Messenger said to him, “I smell the fragrance of idols” then threw it away. The man then came back with a iron ring and the Messenger (may Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Why do I see on you the jewelry of the people of Hell?” He then threw it away. The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, what can I take as a ring?” He replied, “From silver, but do not complete a mitqal.” [al-Mawsu’a al-Kuwaitiyya]

وَفِي الْجَوْهَرَةِ وَالتَّخَتُّمُ بِالْحَدِيدِ وَالصُّفْرِ وَالنُّحَاسِ وَالرَّصَاصِ مَكْرُوهٌ لِلرَّجُلِ وَالنِّسَاءِ (قَوْلُهُ جَوَازُ الْيَشْبِ) بِالْبَاءِ أَوْ الْفَاءِ أَوْ الْمِيمِ وَفَتْحِ أَوَّلِهِ وَسُكُونِ ثَانِيهِ وَتَحْرِيكُهُ خَطَأٌ كَمَا فِي الْمُغْرِبِ، قَالَ الْقُهُسْتَانِيُّ: وَقِيلَ إنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِحَجَرٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ بِهِ وَهُوَ الْأَصَحُّ كَمَا فِي الْخُلَاصَةِ اهـ.

وفي «الفتاوى» : ولا بأس بأن يتخذ خاتم حديد قد سوي عليه فضة، وألبس بفضة حتى لا يرى؛ لأن التزين يقع بالفضة دون الحديد؛ لأن الحديد ليس بظاهر، ذكر في «الجامع الصغير» وينبغي أن يكون قدر فضة الخاتم المثقال ولا يزاد عليه، وقيل: لا يبلغ به المثقال، وبه وردت الآية على ما يأتي بهد هذا إن شاء الله تعالى.

10 – ذَهَبَ الْمَالِكِيَّةُ – فِي الْمُعْتَمَدِ عِنْدَهُمْ – وَالْحَنَابِلَةُ إِلَى أَنَّ التَّخَتُّمَ بِالْحَدِيدِ وَالنُّحَاسِ وَالرَّصَاصِ مَكْرُوهٌ لِلرِّجَال وَالنِّسَاءِ؛ لِمَا رُوِيَ أَنَّ رَجُلاً جَاءَ إِلَى رَسُول اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ خَاتَمٌ شِبْهُ – نُحَاسٍ أَصْفَرَ – فَقَال لَهُ: إِنِّي أَجِدُ مِنْكَ رِيحَ الأَْصْنَامِ (1) فَطَرَحَهُ. ثُمَّ جَاءَ وَعَلَيْهِ خَاتَمُ حَدِيدٍ فَقَال: مَا لِي أَرَى عَلَيْكَ حِلْيَةَ أَهْل النَّارِ فَطَرَحَهُ. فَقَال: يَا رَسُول اللَّهِ: مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ أَتَّخِذُهُ؟ قَال: اتَّخِذْهُ مِنْ وَرِقٍ وَلاَ تُتِمَّهُ مِثْقَالاً (2) .
