Zina & Validity of Prayers

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I read your response about prayer being accepted from Allah (SWA) from someone who has committed zina. I have been told that Allah (SWA) doesn’t accept any of the good deeds that a person offers for a number of 40 days after a big sin has been committed. Would you please explain this for me and if possible, please offer proofs.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

This is not unconditionally true. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) told us that, “The one who repents from sin is like the one who never sinned.” [Ibn Maja; Sakhawi mentioned in al-Maqasid al-Hasana that his teacher Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani declared it sound (hasan)]

Thus, if one sincerely repents—by leaving the sin, feeling remorse, and determining never to return to it again—then there is no reason for one’s worship not to be accepted.

Faraz Rabbani.
