Broken i`tikaf

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I needed to redo an itikaaf because I broke one a few years ago. This year sat for itikaaf for 4 days. And I divided it up, with the intention that the three days is to make up for the broken one and the one day is on its own. I did the continoulsy with renewing my intention after the 3rd day, Is that okay or should I have done something different?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

A broken 10-day i`tikaf isn’t obligatory to make up–unless one pronounced a vow to perform it. However, it is praiseworthy to do so, as best one can (without duty or obligation to do so).
