Getting a medical examination from a doctor of the opposite sex when there is need

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I have consulted with my doctor (Muslim female) and have undergone an examination of the breast as I noticed a suspicious lump. The doctor has further directed myself to a specialist who is a male. I have asked to be sent to a female specialist, Unfortunately, I have been told that there are no female specialist’s in our City. Given the situation and circumstances, will it be allowed to go for such an examination?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his folk, companions, and followers

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

May Allah grant you health and well-being.

In cases when it is not reasonably possible to get treatment from a doctor of the same sex, it is permitted to go to a doctor of the opposite sex.

Please use the search engine at www.SunniPath.com for fiqh visiting doctor.

See, for example:

I have a breast lump but don’t want to be examined by a male doctor…
