Platinum Ring: is it allowed for men?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

The question I have regards platinum, is it allowed for a man to wear this. I have heard that it may be disallowed, however the predicament with that is that if silver is allowed, and it is specifically stated that gold is not, and that their is no mention of platinum, then it would be allowed would it not. I don’t have much knowledge if any, so please help, as my future in-laws are pressurizing me to provide them with an answer. It would be keen to also note that on the periodic table gold, silver and platinum have different chemical symbols, hence making them different precious (pure) metals.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,

In the Hanafi school, only silver rings are permitted for men; other metals are not permitted. There is more leeway in the Shafii school—search the archives at www.sunnipath.com – and one may follow their position if one wishes, though it is best and closest to piety (taqwa) to stick to one’s own school.

Faraz Rabbani.
