Fasting on the 3 Days after Eid al-Adha (the Days of Tashriq – 11, 12, and 13 Dhul Hijja)

Not knowingly, I fasted on the 11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul Hijja. I am in the middle of making up my fasts from previous years. Do I have to do them again since you shouldn’t be fasting on these days or would they be counted by Allah? Also, is it okay to break such fasts if one is invited to eat, or wants to eat?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

It is prohibitively disliked (makruh tahriman) to fast on the two Eids and on what are known as the Ayyam al-Tashriq which are the 11th, 12th and 13th of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijja.

If one begins a fast on one of these days then it would be necessary (wajib) to break the fast and one would not be obliged to make it up.

If however one completes the fast it does count as a fast as mentioned in al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya [1:201, Dar Ihya al-Turath al-‘Arabi] quoting Qadikhan in his renowned collection of fatawa. This being the case, these fasts count as make ups and one does not have to make them up again.

And Allah knows best.
