Eating from the same plate as a non-Muslim

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Would it be permissible to eat from the same plate as a non-Muslim, provided that the food in it self is halal? What if the non-Muslim has eaten something unlawful earlier and I fear that he/she has not washed their hands, causing some haram from their hands to mix with the halal food?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

It is permitted to eat from the same plate as a non-Muslim. The basic assumption of purity isn’t lifted by mere possibility. However, it is recommended to exercise precaution when possibilities are based on reasonable fears–rather than mere misgivings.

And Allah alone gives success.
