What is the status of the hadith in which the Prophet is said to have said that, “Love of one’s homeland is from faith”?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his folk, companions, and followers

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

“The love of one’s homeland is from faith,” is not established as being from the words of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The major authors on fabricated hadiths considered this to be a fabricated hadith–including Saghani, Pattani, Qari, and Ajluni. [Ajluni, Kashf al-Khafa’, 1.413-415; Pattani, Takhkirat al-Mawdu`at, 27]]

The meaning itself is sound if one considers one’s eternal homeland: Paradise. The living heart has a longing for this homeland, and for a person to have longing for it is a sign that they have a heart alive with faith.

Ibn Rajab quotes al-Hasan al-Basri as saying, “When Allah created Adam (peace be upon him), he and his wife lived in Paradise. Then he was sent down from it, and promised that he and his righteous offspring would return to it….So the believer always yearns for their First Home [Paradise].” [Ibn Rajab, Jami` al-`Ulum wa’l Hikam, 380]

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
