What if the imam didn’t have wudu?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

What do you do as an Imam if you find out that you don’t have wudhu during salat? I have broken salat and made one of the Musali to lead the prayer. If that’s wrong, what should be my course of action now for the people who were praying behind and how I can rectify it?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

1. If the imam did not have wudu from the beginning of the prayer, then they never legally started praying: they would have to re-do the prayer.

2. If the imam lost wudu during the prayer, it would be valid to immediately make another the imam.
