Missing School For Hajj

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

As far as I know making it a habit to leave a confirmed Sunnah in the Hanafi school is haram. Considering it is a Sunnah to go for Hajj every year would one be sinning if one does not do so? Does one have to miss school in order to go for Hajj if one doesn’t wish to gain this sin?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

[1] Peforming Hajj after the obligatory Hajj is recommended–not an emphasized sunna–in of itself. In fact, given the intense crowd pressure, many leading contemporary fuqaha suggest not performing repeated sunna Hajjs–in order to let others perform their obligatory Hajj, unless there is a reason (such as taking a spouse or parent, or performing Hajj on behalf of another, leading a group, etc).

[2] School and work commitments one can’t get out of are an excuse that lifts the immediate duty of even the obligatory Hajj, though one should take the means to get permission or leave of absence.

And Allah alone gives success.

Faraz Rabbani
