Intention for non-obligatory prayers

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I know that to pray fard, you have to say it is for Allah Most High. What do you say before praying sunna. Is it for Allah Most High or for Rasul Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? How would I make the intention/niyyah for sunnah prayers?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful & Compassionate

In non-obligatory prayers, a general intention to pray is sufficient, though it is best to specify what one is praying, especially in the sunna prayers (e.g. the sunna of zuhr). [Ibn Abidin, ibid.]
