Prayer and Time Going Out

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

If one is praying their fardh last-minute and they hear the adhan for the next prayer come in during the middle of their prayer, does it invalidate their prayer and turn it into a qadaa? The niyyah for the prayer was made before the iqamah for the next prayer. Does it make a difference if one finishes the prayer before the end of the adhan?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

The exiting of the time only invalidates Fajr prayer. The other prayers are valid, and considered current performances, though one has sinned for not finishing the prayer within its proper time. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

What if they have a sunnah muakkadah they need to pray after their fardh, can they still pray it even though they heard the adhan come in during the middle of their fardh?

Once the time has exited, one cannot perform the previous time’s confirmed sunna. [ibid.]

However, there is nothing wrong with praying a voluntary sunna (nafl) to ‘compensate’ for one’s remissness. Rather, this is a good thing to do, along with the resolve of sticking fast to one’s confirmed sunnas, because they were the inveterate practice of the Beloved of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace), of whom Allah Most High said,

“Verily in the Messenger of Allah you have a finest example for him who longs for Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much.”[33.21]

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
