Punishment for taking photos of animate objects

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: During a Nikah programme recently. A Moulana quoted our prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) saying: “The biggest sins my Ummat will have on the day of judgement is of taking photos” or similar. Is there a hadith you can point out to me for above or taking photos. With the new smart phones every phone is taking pictures.

Bismillaah

A: The Hadith you are referring to is as follows:

إن أشد الناس عذابا عند الله يوم القيامة المصورون (صحيح البخاري 2/880 ، صحيح لمسلم 2/201)

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Those involved in picture-making will be subjected to the worst forms of punishment on the day of Qiyaamat.” (Bukhari 2/880, Muslim 2/201)
