Is it Cheating to Buy a Cooking Pot for Less and Sell it for More?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My neighbour was buying a cooking pot which was £100 for currys. I told her not to get it as I will get one for her from eBay for just £69. She agreed because she is saving £30 on the same pot which she would buy from the shop. So I thought that I would help her. But my intention in this case was that I will buy the pot for just £55 and tell her that it cost £69!! Is that haram or cheating in this case ?? Or does it count as business as she agreed to the price and what I earned out of is my business.

Bismillaah

A: This is haraam as well as cheating.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: Please explain why! The person agreed to the price and don’t have any problem.

Please also explain what is the different between this and the shopkeeper who for example buys milk for £1 and resells it for £2 why is that not Haram and my one is haram? My scenario is the same, I am not cheating that person. If the original price of the item is £150 and I find one for her for £100 she is still saving and the most important part is that she agreed to price. Kindly explain as I was not really convinced.

Bismillaah

A: If she instructed you to just buy it for her then you are her agent only to purchase, not to purchase and sell to her.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
