All of the gold I got as my dowry is in the possession of my in-laws

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria

All of the gold I got as my dowry is in the possession of my in-laws. The value of the gold amounts to the Nisab. My in-laws are not giving it to me. Do I have to give Zakat on it? I don’t live with my in-laws.

If the questioner’s in-laws took possession of the gold from her dowry after she had already received it and became its sole owner, then it is still in her ownership. It is not permissible as per Shari’ah for her in-laws keep it in their possession. However, if the questioner is able to retrieve it from them by any means, then she is responsible for paying Zakat on it, otherwise she isn’t.
