Question

Can I combine the value of gold and silver for Zakat?

Answer

Zakat is compulsory upon a person who possesses the quantum of nisab (i.e. 612.35 grams of silver or 87.47 grams of gold or currency, wealth equivalent to that amount) for a complete lunar year; which is over and above his basic needs and also free from debts. (Raddul Muhtar p.5 v.2)

If a person has little gold and little silver then zakat will have to be given on the combined value of the two if it reaches the nisab value of either one of them taking the interest of the poor into consideration while calculating the zakat. (Fatawa Darul Uloom Deoband p.123 v.6)

Regarding your question, if a person has gold which is less than the Nisab amount and together with this he also has money, then both will be added together and given Zakat thereupon.

You will be required to add the value of 80 grams of gold (even though it is less than the nisab amount) along with one rupee you have in your possession. There is still a value of one rupee, even though it is very little.
