الجواب حامدا و مصلیا

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent and the Most Merciful
A short clarification about employment in banks is thus; All such employments that involve direct Riba (Interest) based transactions such as Manager, Cashier etc are completely Haram and impermissible.
It is stated in a Hadees

Rasoolullahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Ala Alihi Wa Sallam cursed the usurper of interest, the one who pays it, the one who records it and the two witnesses to it, and he said all of them are equal in transgressing” {Muslim Vol 2, page 27}
Also the income earned through such employments too is Haram but opinions defer among the respected Ulama with regard to the employments and the remuneration thereof of employments of the bank which do not involve directly in Interest based transactions, do not involve in writing/recording of Interest, do not involve in becoming witnesses to it and do not have any connection what so ever to the Interest based transactions, namely employment of a security guards etc.
One opinion is that, those employments which do not have direct involvement with Interest too is impermissible since the salary paid to such employees, though they are not directly involved in Interest, are given from the combined funds available in the bank which includes Interest as well, therefore, such employments too are not permissible.
As for the other opinion, the employment which have no connection what so ever with any Interest based transactions is permissible, and the reason behind that is that, the salaries paid to them are although from the combined funds available in the bank, yet the funds accumulated in the bank are not of Interest in toto, rather there are many types of funds mingled together. Cash deposited by the account holders of the bank which is really a debt owed to the account holders by the bank, too is available in banks funds; amounts of capital Investments of the owners of the bank as well, is available in the funds; also the cash which is borrowed as Interest too is available in the funds of the bank. However from the aforementioned avenues of funds in the bank, a large amount consists from the first two avenues and the amount from the third avenue is comparatively less. Hence majority of the funds collected in the bank is Halal. As such, the employment and the remuneration provided from the collected combined funds of the bank to an employee, if he is not at all connected to interest based transaction, is not Haram. However it is preferable even not go for such employments in the bank.
As for phone banking, Shar’i decree on it could be known by sending the comprehensive details of same.

Allah knows best.
